Global National Newscast: Pretty must a must for a traveling Canadian or one that doesn’t have time to watch the news at specific times. A high quality national newscast condensed into 22 minutes, no commercials and updated daily, this is the way a video news podcast should be; why can’t CTV or CBC get on the ball and take some tips from these guys?

Zune Insider: Microsoft’s official Zune audio podcast was originally more of a “techie” blog that took a 4 month hiatus and came back as more of a hip, music blog; however it’s a bit of a hit or miss affair. When the hosts are talking about the latest updates to the Zune or additions to the Zune Marketplace, it can be very informative, as in the recent discussions about the HD Zune. But too often the hyper-caffeinated hosts (Matt & Jessica) will go on about how they spent their weekend at some ‘awesome’ concert or a ‘sick’ exclusive party. Frequently I’ll turn off the podcast halfway through because, well, it’s too much. Then again, maybe it’s just my age…

Anderson Cooper 360 Podcast: Again, this is the way a video news podcast should be; highlights from Cooper’s nightly show condensed into 20-25 minutes, commercial free and pretty informative. It tends to be a bit sensationalist at times (the week-long shows about Michael Jackson’s death springs to mind) but still overall one of the best news programs out there.

Stuff You Should Know Podcast: This was one of the first audio podcasts I signed up for and for the most part, these guys (Josh & Chuck) are very entertaining. In six months of listening to their twice-weekly podcasts I can only think of a couple I didn’t care for, and those ones involved the guys getting a bit preachy. However, the fact that they talk about a wide range of subjects (Competitive eating & Agent Orange were two recent topics), have a good on-air rapport and keep the mood light keeps me coming back.

TechStuff Podcast: Another audio podcast from the How Stuff Works group, this one as the title suggests focuses on the technical side of things (particularly computers, the internet and cell phones) but still manage to be listener-friendly, which is a good thing for people like me.
I can’t say I’ve listened to every program straight-through, since I’m not interested in every topic they cover, but the guys who do the broadcast (Jonathan & Chris) are amusing and certainly know their “stuff.”

Diggnation: Now this is a weekly video podcast I wish was around when I was in my 20′s, because I probably would have followed these guys religiously. A podcast going on four years now, two guys (Kevin & Alex) sit around with their laptops, drink beer and talk about the top stories on digg.com (which Kevin created). It’s not for the kids, the guys freely swear and talk about things you might not want your 8 year old to hear, but it is very, very funny. Like I said, if I younger I’d probably be hanging on these guys’ every word, but as I’m a bit older now some of the humor seems a bit lost on me, like you have to part of these guys’ inner circle to know what they’re laughing about. Sometimes they do live shows in front of massive crowds that creates a frat-party atmosphere, almost annoyingly so, and not much gets accomplished on those shows. However they’re very personable, entertaining and even informative since they’re often discussing what’s on the collective consciousness, although I doubt they’ll replace CNN anytime soon.

CNN Now In The News Podcast: Speaking of CNN, this is a daily video podcast that I’m not sure why I’ve subscribed to, other than that it’s extremely short, usually 2-3 minutes. A very brief broadcast of breaking news stories, it can be pretty outdated by the time the podcast is uploaded to my player. A recent example is the story of the New York plane & helicopter crash over the Hudson, which went on my player a full day after it happened, not exactly breaking news at that point. It’s not bad, but periodically there’ll be commercials tacked on before and/or after the news story, further diluting it’s importance. CNN has many useful podcasts to choose from, unfortunately this isn’t one of them.

Best Ads on Tv: This was an early video podcast I subscribed to, and I think I’m about two clicks away from unsubscribing. The format is as it’s title says, it’s supposedly the best 6 commercials from around the world packaged together, updated weekly. Some of the commercials are entertaining, some are mind-numbingly pretentious. Perhaps it’s the concept, because the commercials are chosen from different countries the message can get lost in the translation; it’s also a weird mismash that can have a shocking commercial about impaired driving followed by one about mentos & beatboxing.

Best of YouTube: Another early video podcast I subscribed, I tend to let most of them go unwatched until I’m in a lazy mood to catch up on them; which is kind of a shame, because they’re generally well-chosen. Once in a while there’ll be a long form video (a recent one about a man’s year-long travel through China was featured) but for the most part they’re quite brief, sometimes only a few seconds (unusual tricks are featured often). Not a bad time-killer although hardly essential.

The Onion News Network: A weekly satirical video podcast that brillantly lampoons CNN, ESPN, morning talk shows and more, they’re generally hilarious (the story “Sony Releases New Piece of S*** That Doesn’t F****** Work” was a classic), although on occasion they can get over-the-top & offensive (“Ex-Pedophile Shares Tips On How To Make Your Kids Less Attractive” was a little too unsettling to be humorous). Nevertheless their fake-CNN stories, complete with a running “news” feed that usually requires a second viewing, make up for the occasional lapse of taste.

Real Time with Bill Maher: Bill Maher’s weekly HBO show condensed into an audio/video podcast, with some sections available in short video segments, and the rest as an audio program. I’m not sure who decides which sections are going to be video, but I think they’re doing the show a disservice by not including the monologues or his fake commercials as videos, since they really are meant to be watched. If you’ve ever watched his tv show or have seen him interviewed, you’ll know right away if his dry political humor is for you. I like Maher, and sometimes his “political panel” can be spot-on about current events, but I think that if Jon Stewart’s Daily Show ever got a free podcast going it would replace this in a heartbeat.

Internet Marketing This Week: A very specialized audio podcast that deals with, as the title says, internet marketing. Hosted by marketing professionals Ed Dale, Paul Colligan, Lynn Terry & Michelle McPherson (albeit not always at the same time), it’s a casual, friendly podcast that discusses the latest happenings in online marketing without trying to sell anything, which can be a real rarity for anyone testing the waters of online marketing. It’s not really a weekly podcast despite its title, they’ve gone as much as a month between broadcasts, but in 9 months of listening to this podcast I’ve found each and every one interesting and informative. Again, it’s a specialized podcast and may be totally irrelelevant to you, but if you’re in this field you certainly can’t go wrong having this on the Zune.

What will I listen to next? Who knows, but that’s the great thing about podcasts these days, if there’s something that interests you in any way chances are there’s a podcast about it. And it’s not like you’re obligated to them either, subscribe for awhile to one and see if it’s to your taste, if not, check out what else is available on the Zune Marketplace. Six months from now I might be listening to totally different podcasts, but that’s half the fun right there. Until then…
