At a press event on April 12th Microsoft announced Kin, their new social movement. Featuring both a fresh OS and two brand new touchscreen phones, Kin looks to propel Microsoft into the social age. The software aims to connect users to the friends and media they want to see. I believe Kin is a great first step to bring Microsoft’s business plan into the year 2010 and look forward to seeing the products in person.

Microsoft KIN ONE and TWO Review

PhoneArena reviews Microsoft’s social-centric phones, the KIN ONE and KIN TWO, available through Verizon Wireless. The KIN ONE is a compact device with portrait sliding QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6-inch QVGA display, while the KIN TWO is a side-slider with a larger, 3.4-inch HVGA display. Both handsets run a platform that looks similarly to Windows Phone 7, but is not smart, meaning the user cannot install third-party apps.

Twitter App on Zune HD

This is a video demonstration of the new Twitter app now available for the Zune HD. The video features two Zunes. On one of the ZuneHDs, I download the twitter app over wi-fi. I go over most of the app’s screens and features. One feature that was a little slow was the search functionality. The interface is very similar to other portions of the Zune HD’s twist interface so it has a pretty easy learning curve. Finally, a re-tweet/quote function is not present in this version of the app. Overall what was present in the program worked with nothing broken out the box. Performance, could have been more smooth. This video was recorded with a Canon EOS 7D at 1920×1080, at 24 frames per second. It was then transcoded in Windows Movie Maker to make the file size smaller than 2GB.

Although I didn’t have time to use it, this is the procedure you’ll have to follow to register for a Zune Social account. You join the new online Zune community with many features, such as sharing tracks (only info, not files) and a Zune Tag (like the one Xbox gamers have)

Microsoft Zune 2

The next-generation Zune has just been announced, coming at you with a price tag of $249 for the 80GB hard drive model and $149/$199 for the 4GB and 8GB flash-based models respectively.

The new features in all models, which were leaked early, are wireless syncing with your computer automatically when you’re in Wi-Fi range—something users have been clamoring for since even before the first Zune—as well as videos in the Zune Marketplace and new music, some of which are DRM-free. The Zune Pad is actually touch sensitive, much like the iPod’s Click Wheel, but better.

The end of this video features an interview with Elana Zur, Product Manager of Zune Canada, with an in-depth look at why this new MP3 player is so formidable.

In all, I rate the Zune 8 out of 10 stars.
